Special AAF-NCI Members Recognized
This year, the AAF-NCI recognized members or companies who have achieved and or contributed much to our organization, their careers and the Greater Lafayette Community.
Lifetime Achievement Award
The Silver Medal Award recognizes lifetime achievement in the marketing, advertising and public relations industry. Criteria for this award are career recognition, duty to community, dedication and involvement in our organization, and the spirit of career accomplishment. This year’s recipient is Patrick Nycz, IDC.
This year’s recipient was born up in Upper New York State and then moved to Nebraska at a young age. After high school, he went on to receive a degree in Advertising and Visual Communication at the University of Kansas in 1986. While there, he gained key customer service skills waiting tables and learned that you find the smartest girl in class and sit next to her and not your college buddies. One of his early 15-minutes of fame as an undergraduate came when he appeared on the front page of the college newspaper hanging from the goalpost after a Jayhawk victory. This monumental occasion is still shared today with family and friends.
After graduation, our recipient took a job as a graphic designer in Kansas City. From there he moved to the Windy City to work at Joss Design Group. He ventured to Shaughnessy McDonald as art director and then creative director until 1996.
In 1996, he went on to become Senior Art Director for IO Design, Inc. From there, he embarked on Lafayette in 1998 and became Senior Art Director at IDC until 2000. But one day he would return.
Warren Industries came calling with a new title of not only Creative Director, but King of Puzzles was bestowed upon him. Still today when he attends conferences or sees old colleagues, he is still referred to as the King of Puzzles.
While at Warren Industries, he attended the Center for Creative Leadership from 2003-2004 which focused on leadership education and research and unparalleled expertise in solving the leadership challenges of individuals and organizations.
One of his peers at Warren said that he was always a positive source in the midst of negativity. He was on point when the deadlines neared, and had an open and trusting relationship with his subordinates. One example was the weekly development meeting that he helped lead. He reached out to all those attending to help make it better and less negative and monotonous.
In 2004, he studied at IU’s Kelley School of Business until 2005. In 2005, he moved on to become Director of Marketing and Creative Services at Mega Brands America, Inc. His co-workers said it was a pleasure to work with him. His creative instincts and knowledge of the product development cycle were the driving force behind MEGA Brand’s games and puzzles success.
In 2009, he ventured back to IDC and became Vice President and Principal. Upon his arrival, he brought back a unique style of management. Around the office he has been known to offer impromptu concerts with guitar in hand and seen performing handstands. Not sure if this unique style had anything to do with it, but in 2012, he became President/CEO.
Around the office today, you will still see him with headsets on, shoes off and strumming his guitar jamming to Rolling Stones music or preparing for his next gig in the Conrad Bone Band. His love and desire to be active in social media can be seen by his many tweets, blogs and postings online. He also isn’t shy about sharing his many online followers around the office.
His employees are always encouraged by his words of advice including:
“This project will be SO awesome when you get it right.”, and “At the end of the day, it is all about growing your client’s business.”
Under his leadership, IDC has and continues to win many advertising and marketing awards including our local ADDYs Best of Show. On a personal note, his time away from the office has been spent as VP of AAF-NCI, on the board of directors for the Lafayette Art Museum and a leader with the Public Education Referendum for the West Lafayette School Corporation and the documentary of Rise above the Mark, aiming to make the US a world leader once again. He is married to Cindy and has two boys, Tyler and Charlie.
Rising Star Award
The Rising Star award is presented to an up-and-coming young professional in the marketing/advertising industry. This year’s winner is Ben Prickel, Lafayette Savings Bank.
Our recipient has been in the advertising/marketing profession since graduating from Wabash College with a degree in Art in 2002. A local graduate at Harrison High School, he received an athletic scholarship to attend Wabash College where he excelled in football and baseball. After graduation, he began working at Purdue Credit Union as communications designer. In 2006, he became communications manager for the Indiana Credit Union League and in 2007 started working as marketing associate for Passageways, a division of PEFCU. In 2008, he became Marketing Assistant at Lafayette Savings Bank.
He has served on the AAF-NCI board of directors and many committees over the past four years. He currently is co-director of the Communications Committee by updating the website, sending out electronic messages and taking pictures at various AAF events.
He is also involved in the community by serving on the Board of Directors for Tippecanoe Child Care where he chairs their marketing committee. TCC has been going thru a re-branding effort under his leadership. He is also a 2009 graduate of Leadership Lafayette.
His work has received many ADDY awards for Lafayette Savings Bank over the years including Best of Show in 2008 and People’s Choice in 2010. He has also been part of winning campaigns for LSB and has received many Indiana Bankers Association Maxi Awards. He has spear-headed many advanced changes at Lafayette Savings Bank since his employment in 2008 involving social media where he holds the position of Digital Marketing Coordinator. In 2013, he received the bank’s Innovation Award and Community Service Award for his efforts.
At 32 years of age, he is committed in making changes not only at work, but in the community he grew up in where he remains an active volunteer.
Presidential Cup Award
The Allison Meadows Beggs Presidential Cup is presented to a member or company who has contributed the most to the organization over the past year. The 2012 Presidential Cup Award is presented to Lafayette Savings Bank for their contribution as a corporate citizen to host the local and district ADDY judging for many years and as a continuous corporate sponsor to AAF-NCI.
