Celebrates 2013-14 American Advertising Awards.

Announcing ADDY Winners and

Silver Medal Winner for Lifetime Achievement!

Lafayette, IN. – February 27, 2014 – The American Advertising Federation - North Central Indiana (AAF-NCI) is pleased to release the 2013-14 American Advertising Award winners that were announced at the ADDY Awards Banquet on February 27, 2014. The ADDYs is conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) which is a three-tier, national competition recognizing exceptional advertising and marketing created in the Greater Lafayette area in all media including print, broadcast, out-of-home and public service.  To be eligible for consideration of an ADDY, all work must be published or aired between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.

Awards Ceremony
This year’s ADDY ceremony was held on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Purdue Memorial Union Ballroom.  The winners were announced during a formal banquet for over 110 AAF-NCI members and guests.   Gold ADDY award winners will automatically advance to the district competition in March, to be held in Lafayette, IN.  Listed below are this year’s Gold and Silver ADDY winners (numbers of awards in each category are in parentheses):

This year, the AAF-NCI recognized members or companies who have achieved and or contributed much to our organization, their careers and the Greater Lafayette Community.

Lifetime Achievement Award
The Silver Medal Award recognizes lifetime achievement in the marketing, advertising and public relations industry.  Criteria for this award are career recognition, duty to community, dedication and involvement in our organization, and the spirit of career accomplishment. This year’s recipient is Jon Sautter.
After graduating from Purdue University with a bachelor’s of communication, followed by a master’s of higher education administration and communication, our award winner chose to remain in his home town of West Lafayette, where he felt he could achieve success in his career while giving back to the community he’d grown to love. He began his career as an assistant editor at MacDonald Advertising and held communication director posts at both Ivy Tech and Purdue before accepting the position of Director of Marketing for School Datebooks, Inc., in spring 2000.
Over the past 14 years, he has overseen every aspect of SDI’s marketing and product development. He energetically manages a four-person creative team that designs and produces catalogs, brochures, and samples that are mailed to more than 100,000 schools nationwide annually, and designs and implements the company’s public website, www.schooldatebooks.com. A gifted problem-solver, he possesses an innate ability to recognize an opportunity and motivate others around him to form partnerships for success. His strategic planning and creative thinking have led to several successful new product launches over the years, where he manages not just the design, but also the development and execution of a comprehensive marketing plan.
During his tenure with SDI, the company has grown almost ten-fold, and now boasts products in more than 10,000 educational institutions around the world. Students everywhere, from primary school through college, are benefitting from the educational resources and organizational tools that Jon has developed to meet rigorous school standards and enhance academic success. This tremendous growth would not have been possible without Jon’s vision, dedication, and tenacity.
He has served his community in a variety of ways, lending his expertise to civic groups. He served on the United Way of Greater Lafayette’s marketing and communication committee for several years, developing and implementing promotional campaigns to meet the ever-increasing fundraising goal set by one of the largest area nonprofits. He currently serves on the marketing committee for Greater Lafayette Commerce working to promote Lafayette-West Lafayette as an attractive destination for families, businesses, and tourists and focusing on enhancing the community’s quality of life.
He comes from a family of educators and is stalwart in his support of public education. He was instrumental in the successful West Lafayette School Corporation fundraiser, “Save Our Schools,” generating the campaign idea and slogan, SOS. Eight teaching positions in the district were saved as a direct result of the money raised through this endeavor. He also provided marketing advice and a yard poster and stationery design for a successful West Lafayette School Board Candidate Campaign … his mother’s. He recently joined the leadership team of Community Commitment to Education, which launched the massively successful Read to Succeed program in Greater Lafayette.
His strengths as a mentor and role model are exemplified through his volunteer work serving youth in the community in various capacities. He has taught classes and lead discussion groups for Junior Achievement. He was instrumental in the formation and served as officer in the Harrison Youth Baseball Organization before moving to the West Lafayette school district. He has coached baseball, softball, and football at several levels for more than 10 years. The coaching has spanned the years, from beginners, through the grade school, to assisting the West Lafayette High School varsity team. Over the years, he has received many compliments from parents for his kind and patient manner with young people.
He has held various positions on the board of AAF-NCI, is a past chair of the ADDY committee, and has served as MC at the banquet. He has also been recognized with ADDY Awards for his work on projects for the ad club and for School Datebooks.
His professional achievements in marketing and communication, his impact as a mentor and colleague among others in the industry, and his commitment to serving as a role model for children and youth in our community demonstrate how a single individual can make an impact and selflessly enhance the lives of others.
Rising Star Award
The Rising Star award is presented to an up-and-coming young professional in the marketing/advertising industry.  This year’s winner is William Cabral.
Our Rising Star winner started working for Purdue Athletics as a camera operator in high school. While attending classes at Purdue University, he became a camera operator for Hall of Music Productions, MooTV (Nashville) and Pete’s Big TVs. He toured with Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, and Leonard Skynyrd. He’s also done video for the Foo Fighters, Def  Leppard, and the Pope. During his time at Purdue, he taught himself how to operate the Steadicam, landing him the spot as the Steadicam and Jib Operator for the University of Pennsylvania Commencement Ceremony for the past seven years.  Additionally, he was a camera operator for Zacuto’s Emmy-winning documentary series “The Great Camera Shootout”, where he helped industry professionals benchmark cameras.
He constantly finds ways to give back to the Film & Video Studies program that has given him his start in the industry.  He volunteers his time teaching supplementary lessons about topics that aren’t provided within the program because he believes that these are important skills/things for a young filmmaker to know. Some of these workshops include Steadicam, Film Equipment, and Lighting.  Even in his down time, he helps students fine-tune their scripts to make sure that they can create successful short films. His altruistic attitude should be admired. When the Film & Video Studies program was in need of a screenwriting instructor this past year, he stepped forward and went above and beyond what was expected of him; he turned a screenwriting class into an entire pre-production class.
His volunteer work is not limited to just students.  Recently he helped the Veterans Association document war stories as therapy to help veterans cope with PTSD.  He even went as far as traveling to Vietnam to give one marine an avenue to express his feelings and emotions through documenting his journey.
Over the years, he has won several awards. Most recently, he was a Finalist in Trigger Street Productions, Jameson First Shot script competition. He’s won two Best in Show ADDYs, one Gold ADDY, and three Silver ADDYs.  In 2010, he won Purdue’s Film and Video Studies Outstanding Alumni Award.
He has excelled at absolutely everything he has done over the past ten years. His many and varied skills, combined with his impeccable work ethic, personal drive and creativity, make him the perfect recipient for the Rising Star Award.
Currently he is the Audio/Video Director at Dearing Group Advertising Agency and is the founder of his own production company, Little Yellow Hatchback Productions, LLC.
Presidential Cup Award
The Allison Meadows Beggs Presidential Cup is presented to a member or company who has contributed the most to the organization over the past year. The 2013 Presidential Cup Award is presented to Jamie Proffitt for her many contributions to AAF-NCI.  This past year she went far beyond her duties as a board member and came to the rescue on many occasions no matter what the problem was and did it with a smile on her face.

AAF-North Central Indiana offers a $500 scholarship for students majoring or minoring in advertising, marketing, communications, graphic design or a related area.Applications are due to the Board of Directors responsible for developing and implementing the scholarship policies, procedures, application process and selection of the recipients. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than January 31, 2015.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must currently be in their second year of college or higher and pursuing a major or minor in advertising, marketing or related field; or the applicant must be a graduating high school senior planning to major or minor in advertising, marketing or a related field. Eligible recipients also must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Permanent residency in the Indiana counties of Tippecanoe, Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Warren or White
  2. Related to paid member of AAF-North Central Indiana
  3. Be a paid member of a student-chapter AAF group in the Indiana counties of Tippecanoe, Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Warren or White

Applications must be returned by January 31 with the winner(s) being chosen in early February. Recognition of the winner and awarding of the scholarship(s) will be held at the AAF-NCI American Advertising Awards on February 24.
